The Chosen One (O Escolhido) is a Brazilian thriller drama web series based on the Mexican series Niño Santo. It is produced by Netflix in association with Mixer Films of which the first spooky season along with six episodes aired worldwide on June 28, 2019. The credit for writing an interesting plot goes to Raphael Draccon and Carolina Munhóz, who succeeded in the first series and ensured the passage of its second part. We initially thought season 2 wouldn’t be out until 2020 but that’s since been confirmed to not be the case. Instead, the series is now due to return in November 2019 as per the season 2 announcement.
The series follows World Health Organization doctors in Brazil who are tasked with vaccinating villagers in remote areas. One village is resistant to the idea. What seems at first to be mere Luddite stubbornness turns out to be much more.
Escalating tensions between the WHO doctors and the villagers is the fact that the town is home to an occult religion that might be a death cult. The town’s militant opposition to vaccines could lead to deadly conflict, and the only person who might be able to stop a holy war is a mysterious healer and prophet known as Escolhido (Renan Tenca).
The ending of season 1 certainly sets up a second season with two of the Doctors discussing going back to the cult to discover how Escolhido is doing what he’s doing. Dr. Lúcia is resistant to head back to the cult but once she discovers she’s been injected with one of the two new mutations, she’ll have little choice in season 2.
“When you write a show whose core is a mystery, you need to make a very risky decision: tell everything in one season giving the audience all the answers but knowing that you can’t extend more than that, or think long term and be aware that you are only going to be able to tell that story on multiple seasons. We went with the second option,” Draccon and Munhóz said, adding how it was worth it, seeing how the audience has responded to the show. “
“We just know that we are proud of the results. ‘The Chosen One’ is a show that we would love to watch as an audience. Fingers crossed!” They added. While we wait for an update on season 2, check out the season 1 trailer to refresh your memories.
