Brittany Runs a Marathon is a 2019 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Paul Downs Colaizzo. The comic drama with modern sensibilities follows 28-year-old Brittany (a luminous Jillian Bell), who is told by her doctor that she needs to lose 55 pounds. Cue Brittany deflecting in her British accent, her go-to defense mechanism. She battles her inner turmoil with outward humor, often making herself the butt of the joke before anyone else can beat her to the punch.
No one holds the subway doors for Brittany. Barely anyone at her job, where she hands out playbills to theater attendees, will make eye contact. Only children laugh at her goofy faces and her silly jokes. Her roommate is a wannabe social media influencer who treats Brittany more like an assistant than a best friend, and who urges her worst instincts. They order food out all the time. They drink constantly. They do a variety of recreational drugs.
She meets a doctor who tells her that her “BMI” is impaired and that she needs to lose weight. Brittany is completely desperate, she thinks that the doctor will prescribe a lot of medicines, but this does not happen. After this meeting a positive change comes in her life, now she knows what she needs to do. She needs to stop going out so much. She needs to apply herself more to her job. She needs to start exercising and focusing on her health.
“We want people to leave the comfort of their home and go out and see something together and have conversations about the film afterward as they walk to their cars in the parking garage,” says Bell. We want to inspire people to think really hard about what they want to do with their lives.”
Amazon Studio has published a trailer along with a detailed description: Hilarious, outgoing and always up for a good time, New Yorker Brittany Forgler is everybody’s best friend ― except maybe her own. At 27, her hard-partying ways, chronic underemployment, and toxic relationships are catching up with her, but when she stops by a new doctor’s office to try to score some Adderall, she gets slapped with a prescription she never wanted: Get healthy. Too broke for a gym and too proud to ask for help, Brit is at a loss, until her seemingly together neighbor Catherine pushes her to lace up her Converse sneakers and run one sweaty block.
The next day, she runs two. And soon, after finishing her first mile, she sets an almost unthinkable goal: running in the New York City Marathon. Award-winning playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo makes his directorial debut with Brittany Runs a Marathon, an uproarious, irreverent and surprisingly emotional comedy inspired by real events. The irresistible cast, led by Jillian Bell, lends heart and soul to this inspirational story of a party girl who finally finds real friends — and dignity — by taking control of her future, one city block at a time.
You’ll be able to watch the movie on Nov. 22, 2019. It will be the second of the three Amazon Original movies for the month, with One Child Nation coming first and The Report coming at the end of the month. Check out the trailer above.
