The First-Ever Thai Original Netflix Series ‘The Stranded’
The Stranded is a teen mystery drama directed by horror flick guru Sophon Sakdaphisit, who is best known for his extraordinary project Shutter (2004). The series is co-directed by Oscar nominee Gary Levinsohn (Saving Private Ryan, 1993) that is the first Thai original coming to Netflix. The Stranded or Kweng (Thai) is a joint project of the GMM Grammy and H2L Media group and aired a day back on November 15, 2019, on Netflix.
The mystery-thriller series follows 37 students of an elite private school who are left stranded on a remote island on the Andaman Sea after a huge tsunami hits the island. It follows the story of 18-year-old Kraam, a tsunami survivor and what his friends go through when they are abandoned in the middle of nowhere. As a series of mysterious events start happening around them on the island, each of the teenagers’ lives starts to get affected and they seek to escape. With no one to rescue them, the kids will have to find their own way out of the island if they want to survive.
Season 1 of The Stranded has 7 episodes that each has a runtime of around 45 minutes, usually, an episode will end with something quite interesting. The very end of episode 1 features a moment that is clearly supernatural in ways but up until this moment, the plot seems to simply revolve around a natural disaster. While a tsunami is so wild that it may seem supernatural, it is quite natural and extremely intense.
‘The Stranded’ stars some of the popular faces of Thailand’s entertainment business, like Sinjai Plengpanich, Sarunyoo, and Hattaya Wongkrachang, along with Winai Kraibutr, Beam-Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote, Pat-Chayanit Chansangavej, March-Chutavuth Pattarakampol, Jack-Kittisak Patomburana, and Oab-Oabnithi Wiwattanawarang, among many others.
Rising actor Beam-Papangkorn Lerkchaleampote plays the lead role of 18-year-old Kraam in the series. He has earlier worked in ‘Project S the Series’ (2017). Sinjai is a known Thai actor, known for ‘Love of Siam’ (2007), ‘Air America’ (1990) and ‘Plae Kao’ (2014), while Hattaya Wongkrajang is known for ‘Project S the Series’ (2017) and ‘Bangkok Love Stories: Plead’ (2019). The English voiceovers are done by Michelle Fang, Nicole Fong, Darren Keilan for the lead roles of Noey, May, and Kraam respectively.
