Spinning Out: Netflix Review
Spinning Out is an ice skating drama series created by Samantha Stratton and Lara Olsen (Reign), who also serve as co-showrunners, alongside Joby Harold, Tory Tunnel and Matt Shwartz. The 10-episode series is set to debut on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2020 on Netflix.
The plot of the athletic drama revolves around an elite solo figure-skater, Kat Baker (Scodelario), who is relentlessly trying to restore herself to be worthy of her lost title. She is weighed down by the trauma of a head injury that she formerly suffered while on the ice. Her career is the end-game, while the risk of a guarded secret being exposed poses a grave threat. To get back in the groove and in order to be able to compete again, Kat partners with a rather easy-going fella (Roderick) as a pair-skater. Only, he thinks she’s too uptight and edgy. Her highly-ambitious and emotionally-abusive mother (Jones), on the other hand, thinks she’s a waste of talent. Despite being a live spectator to her daughter’s efforts to get back into the Olympic sport, she labels her to be lazy.
Its staring Skins alum Kaya Scodelario, Arrow‘s Evan Roderick, January Jones from Mad Men, Willow Shields of The Hunger Games fame and Sarah Wright Olsen from Parks and Recreation. Reign alum Will Kemp, Amanda Zhou of IT Chapter Two, Svetlana Efremova from House of Cards, Kaitlyn Leeb of Degrassi: The Next Generation fame, All American’s Mitchell Edwards and American figure skater, Johnny Weir also portray regular characters.
The intense trailer hinted at a whole lot more at behind-the-scenes, than what we perceive to be is figure-skating. A gruesome scar at the back of her head, the use of narcotics, self-harm, excessive drinking, a love triangle, her mother’s mental and verbal abuse form the basis of Kat’s inner-conflict. Roberts currently appears on “American Horror Story: Apocalypse,” having previously appeared in several of the Ryan Murphy anthology series’ past seasons. She also collaborated with Murphy on the Fox series “Scream Queens.” Roberts is perhaps best known for her role in the Nickelodeon series “Unfabulous,” and has recently appeared in films like “Who We Are Now,” “In a Relationship,” “Nerve,” and “We’re The Millers.” She is repped by CAA and Sweeney Entertainment.
Netflix has published a trailer on December 10 along with a short description, “After a devastating fall threatens her competitive skating career, Kat Baker seizes an opportunity to pursue her Olympic dreams, but at the risk of losing everything. Spinning Out follows Kat as she battles her personal demons and faces drama both on and off the ice. Watch all episodes of Spinning Out January 1, only on Netflix.” A few more lines added in description, “A figure skating Olympic hopeful struggles to balance love, family and fragile mental health as her dream of winning takes a dizzying hold.” Check out the trailer above.
