The Circle: Netflix Canada’s New Reality Series
The Circle is an innovative popularity contest and social experiment inspired by the experience of using social media. It is categorized scandalous and reality talk show at the Netflix official webpage, we also came to know that well-known comedian and actress Michelle Buteau will host the show that is all set to air on January 1, 2020, with more episodes on Wednesday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 15 on Netflix.
The series is not entirely different from many other reality TV shows in that contestants are in a house together, but what sets The Circle apart is that they can’t actually interact face to face, they can only interact via “the circle,” which is essentially an online profile, they communicate through a special voice-activated social media platform and rate each other frequently. Unpopular players are “blocked” and ultimately the most popular player wins a cash prize. Since they only know each other through their online dialogue and profiles, players can choose whether to present a true or fictional version of themselves. It’s a game exploring questions of honesty and trust when people can’t see each other in the flesh.
“The Circle has already proven to be a compelling, timely, and buzz-worthy show,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix Vice President of Unscripted Content. “We think the show’s combination of modern social media interaction and competition will captivate Netflix members around the world, in multiple languages, and we’re delighted to partner with Studio Lambert and Motion to produce these three new local versions.”
“Social media has radically changed the way we make friends, conduct relationships, argue and even fall in love,” says Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, “but how truthful are our online identities? The Circle is a thought-provoking and entertaining way of exploring such questions and the chance to make different versions for Netflix’s global audience was irresistible.”
Netflix has published a trailer on December 10 along with a short description, “Truth, Lies, and influencer ties—players will be whoever and do whatever it takes to win in The Circle, a new reality-competition series, streaming January 1 on Netflix. The Circle premieres Wednesday, January 1 with new episodes dropping Wednesday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 15. Be yourself — or someone else? In this light-hearted, strategic competition show, the players must choose, all while chasing a cash prize.” From the trailer alone, it looks like the series is going to be full of drama and very entertaining, and to make things better, the winner takes home $100,000.
