AJ and the Queen is an upcoming American comedy series, created by RuPaul and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City), who serve as executive producers for the series as well. What happens when two very different people are forced together by circumstance? Usually, it’s a buddy comedy which is an old but a hit concept. The 10-episode hour-long comedy follows the adventures of a drag queen named Ruby Red (RuPaul Charles) and AJ (Izzy Gaspersz). Michael-Leon Wooley, Katerina Tannenbaum, Tia Carrere, and Josh Segarra are the other stars in the series. Season one of the comedy show is all set to premiere on Netflix on January 10, 2020.
According to an official synopsis, “a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway. As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.”
“This show isn’t about a drag queen in a kid’s show. This is about a kid in a drag queen’s show. It’s edgy, and it has some dark themes in there,” RuPaul said in an interview about the series. “It was something I was eager to explore. To prove to myself that I’m not dead inside. I proved to myself that I could pull those emotions up. It’s intoxicating.”
Netflix has published a trailer on December 4, 2019, along with a short description, “RuPaul stars in this outrageous series as a down-on-her-luck drag queen traveling across America in an RV with a tough-talking 10-year-old stowaway.
