The Emmy award-winning comedian John Mulaney has partnered with Netflix and come up with something different and exciting befitting this decade’s end. We are talking about Netflix’s upcoming show ‘John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch’ which is a children’s special show directed by Rhys Thomas who is known for his previous work such as Saturday Night Live. John has assembled a group of talented kids and special guest stars for the delightful and light comedy show that aims to recreate the vibe of children’s TV shows of old – with a modern, surreal twist. John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch launches globally on Netflix on December 24, 2019.
Here is the official synopsis of the series penned by Mulaney itself, “I’m John Mulaney and I am a 37-year-old man. The Sack Lunch Bunch is a group of children ages 8-13 who are more talented than me. In this special, we are joined by celebrity guests like David Byrne, Tony Award Winner Andre De Shields, Natasha Lyonne, Annaleigh Ashford, Shereen Pimentel, Richard Kind, and Jake Gyllenhaal from the movie Zodiac. The result is a collage of Broadway-caliber showstoppers, comedy sketches for all ages, meditations on the unknown from children and adults, and a papier-mache volcano. It’s funny, musical, joyous, anxious, and surprisingly profound.”
“What you’re about to see is a children’s TV special, and I made it on purpose,” Mulaney says, flanked by a group of 8- to 13-year-old children known as The Sack Lunch Bunch. “It’s a show for kids, by adults, with kids present.” Mulaney goes on to promise his intentions are pure; he recently watched modern TV shows aimed at kids and “didn’t like [them] at all — but I liked it when I was a kid, which means it was better back then. So I made it like then.”
Netflix categorized the family comedy as quirky and goofy, which is starring Alexander Bello and Tyler Bourke along with John Mulaney. Other cast members are Ava Briglia, Oriah Elgrabli, Isabella Iannelli, Zell Steele Morrow, Linder Sutton, Cordelia Comando, Jake Ryan Flynn, Jacob Laval, Jonah Mussolino, Camille De La Cruz, Orson Hong, Suri Marrero, and Lexi Perkel.
Netflix has published a trailer on December 17 along with a short description, “A children’s musical comedy special from a man with neither children nor musical ability. John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch streams Dec 24th, only on Netflix.” Added, “John Mulaney and his kid pals tackle existential topics for all ages with catchy songs, comedy sketches and special guests in a nostalgic variety special.” Check out the trailer above.
