Father’s Day movie marathon: Five movies to enjoy with your Dad over the weekend
The time has come to joyously greet yet another weekend, and to celebrate it with your beloved father. Even as you seize the golden opportunity that Father’s Day presents to spend some quality time with your dad and mull over the best ways to showcase your appreciation and affection, know that the inspiration you seek to express your gratitude for everything he means to you may just reside in one of these movies. You could watch them with him, or take notes and come up with your own distinctive ideas to surprise him. Either way, this list of films with their kaleidoscopic perspectives on fatherhood is bound to prove useful.
When caught in the maelstrom of uncertainties and difficulties stirred up by life itself, clasping the hands of those you love and unflinchingly moving onward is bound to lead you back onto the path to success and stability. No movie conveys this message better than The Pursuit of Happyness. Chris Gardner and his little son Christopher Jr. may have their fair share of tribulations to overcome, but together, putting one foot in front of the other, they keep moving forward, motivating us all with their unfaltering determination.
An epic tale sweeping across dimensions and outer space, Interstellar is, at its heart, the story of the powerful bond of love between a father and his daughter that transcends time and is instrumental in securing the future of the human race. While Cooper may have been separated from his daughter Murphy when she was a young girl, they still find their way back to each other in the most unusual and unexpected of ways, discovering and defying the fundamental norms of the universe to do so.
After the death of his sister, Frank takes in her only child and raises her like his own daughter. However, he soon finds himself in a legal battle to protect the happy and carefree childhood of his prodigious niece, to save her from falling victim to her grandmother’s ambitions. As the story progresses, a heartbreaking past is also uncovered, raising the stakes for Frank’s victory in the audience’s eyes.
How better to celebrate Father’s Day than with the love of three affectionate dads, and a film set to the ABBA soundtrack? Furthermore, you also get to discover how Sophie’s quest to find her biological father concludes unexpectedly for everyone in her family.
This movie is the obvious choice, and needs no explanation. Whether you and your father are watching the animated version or the live action version, this film will surely remind both of you of who you are, and you will realize, with a pleasant twinge of nostalgia, that it has always lived inside you, and added its colours to the rainbow hues of your childhood.
We wish all of you cinephiles a very happy Father’s Day and hope that the movies we have recommended serve as the icing on the top of your celebratory cake, in addition to limning your Sunday afternoon a richer shade of gold.
